3-2-1 Teacher Bio with The Pickett Press

Saturday, June 27, 2015

I was on Bloglovin' and I came across a new link-up (at least new to me), titled 3-2-1 Teacher Bio.  I was enjoying reading and learning about other teachers, so I decided it would be fun to participate!  Hang on to your hats!

1. This will be my second year in the classroom.  I spent my first four years as a media specialist at the same school.  Due to budget cuts and retirements, I was moved to the classroom.  It had been 8 years since I had been in the classroom and boy had things changed!  My first year went really well...see second about the teacher me

2. My first year back in the classroom was a success.  Of course, being the regular me, I started thinking about how I could improve and make things even better for the next year.  I was speaking to the principal one day, and she asked if I would be willing to accept the nomination for our school's Teacher of the Year award.  JAW DROP!  I think if that is something I can achieve my first year back in the classroom, I can only imagine how well I can do next year!

3. Over plan...I'm sure I am not alone in this.  I wanted to do so much with my students that I would spend a lot of time planning and having lots of activities for us to complete.  We were not able to complete everything by the end of the year, but I feel that my students were successful and they worked really hard!
1. I love to read! Now that I've said that, I feel like I am not reading enough.  My boyfriend knows that when I am reading, other things do not exist.  I get wrapped up in my reading and often read before I go to sleep, because it takes me to other places and I do not have my thoughts consuming my brain!  It makes sense that I have a Masters in Library & Information Science!

2. I am extremely OCD! I do not like when things are out of place.  This definitely makes me very organized!  Again, my boyfriend knows this about me, so he often consults with me before putting things away!  ;-)
I wish, I wish, I wish!  I have a friend that lives there with her husband (military) and I am jealous every time I see pictures on Facebook!  I have always wanted to travel to Italy and cannot wait until I actually get to go!  Pasta and wine...where can you go wrong?!

There's just a snippet about me!  Feel free to participate!  Thank you to Learning in Wonderland for hosting this link-up!  Go and check out others!

Keys to a Successful School Year Blog Series: Key 1 Organization

Wednesday, June 24, 2015

I just came home from a wonderful lunch with some teacher friends!  It is the music teacher's birthday and we met up to celebrate and have lunch!  It is nice to see them and spend some time with them outside the school year!

I am working on trying to relax this summer...

However, I found out about a week and half ago that I will be teaching a 3rd/4th split next year! AHHHH!!  This will be my 2nd year in the classroom and I am being thrown a curve ball.  Last year I moved from the media center to the classroom, and now I will be prepping for 2 grades.  DEEP BREATHS!

So, what does this mean?  I am going to have to work even harder to maintain my sanity.  How am I going to do that?  I will be presenting a series of blog posts on how I plan to be successful this upcoming school year.  Key #1 to be successful: ORGANIZATION!

In order to keep my sanity, I am going to have to stay organized.  Now, I am pretty good at organization, and I expect it from my students, but I am going to have to work hard at it this year.  Last year I would have master copies of papers and I would either recycle them or throw in a pile behind my desk, because I did not have a place to store them.  No more!  Now it is time to organize with binders!

Organize My Lesson Materials

Yesterday, I went to Office Max (aka Office Depot) and they were having a sale on their binders! YAY!  I found them in really cute colors and printed these editable binder covers from Learning in Wonderland.  Here is what they look like on the outside!

There is nothing on the inside, yet.  I will be adding tab dividers to make it easy to locate the materials I need.  I am also going to be making more binder inserts for additional needs (small groups, teacher binder, etc.).  I will post more pictures later, when I have worked on them more!

Organize My Classroom

I work hard to maintain organization in my classroom.  This was when I first moved in to my classroom last year.  I have these 3 Sterilite containers and planned to use them to help keep my students organized.  I ended up leaving them at the front of my classroom and they collected dust.

I am going with a black and bright colors theme this year, so I need to transform the boring white to this!

I need to buy 2 more containers, so that I have 1 for each group.  I will have to upload pictures of those later, as well.  My current drawers are at school.  Not only do I need to make them cute, they need to be utilized, so I need to decide what will be placed in the drawers.  I want to have 1 drawer for math manipulatives, but I still need to decide what I want in the other drawers.  Any suggestions?

Student Organization

We all have students that have a natural ability to organize....and students that do NOT have that ability!  Therefore, it is important to teach students how to be organized!  One of the things that the other 4th grade teacher and I discussed is utilizing a binder system for the students to use, so that they can stay organized with all of their materials.  They will even have different folders for the subjects.  I created a binder cover to go with our school "mascot".  We are the All-Stars, so I went with the S.T.A.R. (Students That Are Responsible) theme.

Grab this freebie from my TPT store!

I will also be teaching them how to organize their desks, since those tend to be messy.

How do you/your students stay organized during the school year?

TPT Seller Challenge #2

It's week 2 of the TPT Seller Challenge!  I am enjoying this challenge so far and it seems that MANY others are enjoying it as well!  The focus of the challenge this week is to blog about my goals and dreams for my TPT business.

First of all, I have to say I LOVE Teachers Pay Teachers!  I think this was a business that was created with great consideration and thought in mind.  I am glad that I am able to support other teachers and help them achieve their dreams, while improving my teaching career and helping my students be successful.

I feel like I am just beginning, even though I have been working on my blog and TPT for a couple of years.  It has been very sporadic and I want to be better than that.  I know I can be better than that!  So, here are my dreams for my TPT business!

Pay off student loans: I know that a lot of people out there feel this pain! It is outrageous how much it costs to get an education and I went to grad school, so that adds more fuel to the fire!  I love my job and I am glad that I earned a MLS, but it was costly. I commute 1 hour (each way) from my job to home, so I have to make sure to be mindful of how much money I spend.  In growing my TPT business, this is my first hope that I can be successful, so that I can pay off my debt and start living free (well, somewhat free)!

Travel: I love to travel, but of course that costs money!  And when you have bills to pay (see above) that create a problem!  My dream vacations would be to Italy, Tahiti, and Hawaii.  Oh, and to go anywhere related to Harry Potter (England & Universal Studios in FL)!  In case you didn't know, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Harry Potter series!

Save for retirement: I feel like this may be a higher priority than traveling, but we still need to enjoy life, right?  I want to be able to retire as a younger age than what I see some teachers retiring at now.  The other 4th grade teacher at my school is old enough and has enough time, but she is supporting her children and grandchildren with her salary.  I don't want to have to spend my golden years in that position, so saving for retirement is key!

Help support my family: Boy, how am I going to do all of those things listed above AND this?!  Only with the help of others who would be willing to help me grow my business! I have a wonderful man that takes care of me and pays the bills for our house!  I would love to be able to help him in return!

Wow, that was a lot of big dreaming, but I know I can do it!  I just have to keep putting myself out there!

What are your dreams?

Thank you to Third and Hollywood and friends for this challenge!  It is keeping me motivated at the moment and making me strive to improve myself!  I am looking forward to next week's challenge.

TPT Seller Challenge Week 1: Makeover Madness

I am somewhat new to the TPT seller experience.  I am working on revamping my image and this was a perfect way for me to do just that!  I am excited to participate in the TPT Seller Challenge!

For week 1, I have to take a product in my store and do a makeover!  I have 12 products currently.  Like I said, I am fairly new to this!  My best-selling item is something I created while I was still working in the media center: Library Word Wall Cards.

  Here is the before:

Drum roll please...

Ah, I think that looks much better and will be better suited for a word wall!  This will definitely motivate me to change the other word wall cards and add more options of color choices!  If you are interested in purchasing or want to pass it along to your media specialist, click here for the link to my the product!

I am looking forward to next week's challenge!
